Let's have a look at some of the standout rides speeding your way in Top Drives Update 29.0 German Powerhaus - Autobahn Icons!

2020 Volkswagen Golf GTI

Forget the Golf R; the Volkswagen Golf GTI is the connoisseur’s choice in the brand’s sporty models. It’s less powerful, but all the more fun for it as you can use it to the full on public roads without fear of breaking the law, and the clever front differential means it claws its way out of corners in a very satisfying way. It feels less grown-up than the Golf R, more playful and fun to drive. Then there’s the special tartan interior that’s featured on so many great Golf GTI models over the years, the understated-yet-sporty looks and the fact it costs less to buy than the R as well. It’s certainly not one to underestimate, despite living in the shadow of a more powerful sibling.

2022 Volkswagen ID. Buzz

The Volkswagen camper van is a true automotive icon and one of the most evocative design symbols of the 1960s overall. Think about how many T-shirts, stickers and backpacks have the van featured as a design icon. That’s why the new ID. Buzz has been so well received: its design isn’t just a copy of the classic VW bus or camper van, it’s a truly modern interpretation of it and the all-electric powertrain means it appeals to mainstream audiences and hippies alike. Its massive interior space means it’s useful as a family bus or even for businesses to carry people around in style too.

2015 Volkswagen XL Sport

The Volkswagen XL1 was a revolutionary eco-car, designed to be as economical and efficient as a car could possibly be. With a tiny, low-power engine, lightweight construction and ultra-slippery aerodynamic bodywork, it could travel 100km with only one litre of diesel. Yet this is not a Volkswagen XL1, it’s an XL Sport. It takes the aspects of the XL1 that are shared with sports cars (the low weight and aero) but engineers binned the economical engine and stuck in the 200hp V-twin engine from the Ducati 1199 Superleggera motorbike. It seemed crazy at the time and is even more exciting now - we wish something like it had actually been made.

2023 Audi RS 6 Avant performance

You could make a convincing argument that the Audi RS 6 is one of the best all-round cars ever built. It combines comfort, interior space and technology with the kind of handsome looks and excellent performance that enthusiasts want, and the latest version is surely the best yet. It’s better to drive than ever and has a faintly ridiculous 621bhp, which should be enough for the daily commute. 0-62mph takes just over three seconds, yet the RS 6 is roomy and easily capable of carrying a wardrobe or fridge should you need to. Some say it’s a Jack of all trades, master of none, but there’s always compromise to be made and we love the RS 6’s amazing versatility. You might dream about owning an Audi R8, but the RS6 has far more reasons for you to actually use it.

2021 Opel Manta GSe ElektroMod

Classic car electric conversions are becoming more and more popular, but few have done it better than Opel with its Manta GSe ElektroMod. This was presented like a concept car but it’s a real 1974 Opel Manta fitted with a custom 31kWh battery pack and a 147 horsepower electric motor. It’s a real, driveable car that sets the standard for electric conversions. Instead of replacing the powertrain of a car that’s loved for its engine, Opel rightly saw fit to choose a model we loved for its pretty bodywork and fun driving experience, and retained both with its modern conversion. It even keeps its manual gearbox and a clutch pedal, although you don’t actually need to use it to come to a stop.
