Here are just a few examples of the new Lamborghinis:
350 GTS
Before Lamborghini set the world alight with mid-engined supercars, it created the 350 GT, a conventional grand tourer with a V12 mounted ahead of the driver. It boasts a deeply elegant design thanks to its Carrozzeria Touring bodywork, but it’s the convertible, the 350 GTS, that takes the award as one of the prettiest Lamborghini’s ever produced. The 350 line-up may be less familiar than the Miura, Countach, and Diablo badges, but that doesn’t make it any less exceptional. Not only was it Lamborghini’s first ever production convertible, it also got the brand’s famed all-aluminium quad-cam 60° V12 engine - a unit that would remain in use for almost fifty years.
Aventador LP 700-4 Miura Homage
Creating a suitable tribute to the Lamborghini Miura, one of the most beautiful and technologically innovative cars to have ever been created, is not an easy task. Not even if you start with an Aventador, a car from the same town and one that is similar in concept. But, by taking design and detail elements of the original Lamborghini supercar and adding them to the Aventador in a sympathetic and respectful manner, the LP 700-4 Miura Homage is a triumphant success. Available in the Miura’s original paint colours up top with gold or silver sills below, the Miura’s essence is clearly visible, even five decades later.
Estoque
Nothing would be more appropriate for a mafia boss to be driven around in than a Lamborghini saloon. So it’s a surprise that the Estoque never made it to production. With the 5.2-litre V10 from the Gallardo mounted behind an Aventador-like nose, it’s only the front of the Estoque that screams Lamborghini. Once you reach the A-pillar, it morphs into a sedate and refined saloon car, albeit one with a low roof line, sharp lines, and a sloping 1960s coupé-like boot. Still, with a repertoire that spans from off-roaders to supercars, an ultra-fast saloon rival to the Porsche Panamera seems like a missed opportunity that we’d like to have seen on the roads.
LM001
High on the success of the outrageous Countach, Lamborghini ventured into some unconventional projects in the 1970s. The strangest is the development of a military vehicle. The first attempt was the Cheetah, an off-roader with a rear-mounted V8 and no doors.
The Cheetah project was quickly ditched after one prototype. Work then began on its replacement, the LM001. Still with a lacklustre V8 positioned behind the rear axle, but now with four doors, the new Lamborghini off-roader wasn’t much of an improvement, and just one LM001 was built. While not successful, the early Lambo off-roaders can take credit as the inspiration for the road-going LM002 and even the mainstream Urus SUV that would arrive nearly 40 years later.
