Day in the Life of... a Marketing Artist
Posted on
What’s life as a Marketing Artist at Hutch like? We picked the brains of Charlotte to tell you all about it…
What brought you to Hutch?
I’d been looking to get into the games industry. I’ve always enjoyed playing various games on different platforms for as long as I can remember. Thankfully I had lots of friends working in games who helped me gain the confidence to go for a Marketing Artist role at Hutch. I’m so glad to be here!
A typical morning task is…
… looking over the previous day’s working and checking that I’m heading in the right direction. This could mean talking to other teams in Hutch to get their advice and feedback, or just getting stuck in!
A typical afternoon task is…
My afternoons can change depending on the type of task I’m working on. If it’s a simpler task I’m bringing this to completion, which means speaking with the person who requested the videos or statics and checking they are happy with the result, or implementing their feedback to get it just right. If it’s a more complex task, that will take a few days to complete, I just crack on with this for the rest of the day.
Tell us a bit about your role?
I’m lucky to be part of a team that works across all Hutch titles, which keeps work really fresh and interesting! One day I’ll be working on social media images for Top Drives, the next I’ll be working on promotional videos for F1 Manager, and then I could be working on new marketing strategies for Rebel Racing.
I work with a variety of programs such as Photoshop, After Effects, Maya and Unity. I didn’t use all of these programmes when I joined Hutch so I’m really pleased that my knowledge base continues to grow in line with the needs of the marketing campaigns we’re creating.
My favourite kind of meeting is…
Planning meetings around content launches are really fun! Before we launch new content, static images and videos are needed to promote the game and show the new experience our players will have. Last year my favourite campaign to work on was the Halloween update for Rebel Racing. For this I got to create videos showcasing the new elements added in the game.
The other type of meeting (yes I have two!) that I really enjoy are the Masterclasses. This is a chance for Hutchies to showcase a skill for the rest of the team to learn. For example, recently we had a Masterclass with Dave who showed us how how he completed a task in Unity. The idea of sharing knowledge within the team means more of us will be able to complete similar tasks in the future.

Now that we’re all remote working, how do you stay sane and avoid screen overload?!
I’m quite a crafty person in my spare time, so when Hutch launched its very own Taskmaster, I was in my element! We were given weekly tasks to complete, which would then be judged by the Hutch Taskmaster himself, our Studio Co-ordinator, George!
This meant I was coming up with some crazy concepts for tasks such as ‘Make the most Exotic sandwich’ (see below) and ‘Best self-portrait without using conventional art supplies’. Seeing everyone’s entries was great fun, and my competitive streak came out as I tried to get the most points.
I’m proud to say I was crowned the winner of Hutch’s Season One of Taskmaster!I’m also a fashion design graduate, so when I’m not playing games in my free time I enjoy re-creating some of my favourite game characters in cosplay. This ranges from sewing outfits to creating props out of foam!
What have you been most proud of since starting at Hutch?
2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for a lot of people. Being able to give something back whilst I’ve been lucky enough to work remotely was something I was interested in doing.
I joined the Hutch Social Responsibility committee last year, where we discuss all things charity, environment and well-being related at Hutch. As part of this we decided to help fundraise some money for the amazing charity SpecialEffect. They’re an amazing games charity that uses specialist technology to enhance the quality of life of people of all ages who have severe physical challenges, whether as a result of a disability, traumatic injury or debilitating illness.
On October 2nd Team Hutch completed a combined distance of 307km for SpecialEffect’s #OneSpecialDay. That’s the distance of the 2020 British Grand Prix, ie. 52 laps of the Silverstone Circuit! We raised over £5500 as a team which was a huge achievement and one that I was very proud to be part of.
I couldn’t do my job without…
The rest of the Marketing Team! In our team there’s a huge variety of expertise and knowledge between us all. If I’m struggling with a task, be it an art-block that I can’t seem to shift, or a skill that I’m not confident in and need help with, the team are always there to help.
I’ve recently had my Hutch anniversary and have been working here now for 1 year! In that year I’ve started to branch out my skills and this wouldn’t have been possible without the help and encouragement from my fellow team mates. As we like to say, if you’re having a problem there’s no question too silly!
The best part of my job is…
When I started as a Marketing Artist at Hutch I had only ever worked in 2D and am now branching out and learning new software to help further my skills. This is really exciting when 3D can be daunting to start with, but having all the expertise from other Hutchies if I run into any problems or have questions is such a huge asset. This means moving forwards I can work on an even bigger variety of different tasks within the team.
Hutch in one word…
